Title: Water Information Storage and Retrieval Database (WIZARD)
Description:
Abstract:
WIZARD is an acronym for Water Information Storage and Retrieval Database and represents a repository of information on fresh-water wells drilled into aquifers in Kansas. It contains data on the location and consturction of Kansas wells drilled for water and water-related purposes. WIZARD consolidates information fomerly maintained by several local, state, and federal agencies. For wells that are part of the statewide or local water-level observation networks, WIZARD contains an historic record of water levels measured at various times during the year. Most of these data consist of annual measurements of depth-to-water taken in the winter, but some wells are measured on a quartley or monthly basis. Except for location information, data are not complete for all wells. WIZARD is owned and maintained by the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) for use by the citizens and agencies of the State of Kansas. WIZARD resides physically at the KGS in Lawrence, Kansas as an ORACLE relational database consisting of 19 related tables. Water-level measurements and other information in WIZARD can be accessed via the Internet at <http://magellan.kgs.ku.edu/WaterLevels/index.html>.
Purpose:
The mission of the Kansas Geological Survey, operated by The University of Kansas in connection with its research and service program, is to conduct geological studies and research and to collect, correlate, preserve, and disseminate information leading to a better understanding of the geology of Kansas, with special emphasis on natural resources of economic value, water quality and quantity, and geologic hazards. WIZARD is designed to consolidate data from a variety of sources and to serve as a unified provider of verified information for all potential customers of ground-water data in the state.

The information in WIZARD, with the exception of data on private ownership, is freely available to any interested persons. Local, state, and federal agencies and offices, as well as qualified individuals, can apply for a user account that allow direct access to WIZARD or access the information via the Internet at <http://magellan.kgs.ku.edu/WaterLevels/index.html>.

The Kansas Geological Survey is not responsible for the quality or accuracy of data in the WIZARD database. The database contains unverified, and raw data that are made available solely for the convenience of interested parties with the understanding that not all data are reliable. Some information in the WIZARD database has been retrieved from provisional data maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Ground Water Sire Inventory (GWSI). The data contained in WIZARD may and almost certainly does contain errors both from the GWSI database and as a result of importing in into WIZARD. Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The information in WIZARD has been derived from several preexisting sources. Most of the information on well locations, well ID numbers, elevations, construction, and similar features has been taken from the U.S. Geological Survey's Ground Water Site Inventory (GWSI). With the exception of data for those wells which are included in the Kansas Geological Survey's observation well measurement program, none of this information has been verified. The GWSI database is also the source of historical measurement data of depth to water. Since 1996, the U.S. Geological Survey has obtained these depth-to-water measurements data directly from the State and local agencies that make the measurements. About two-thirds of the annual water-level data are now submitted by local GMDs and the Division of Water Resources; the other third is being updated on an annual bases with information collected by the KGS using WaterWitch. Water level and locational data from WaterWith is subjected to automatic data verification and cross-checking by global positioning systems (GPS). Data received from other source have undergone less extensive checking. The identification of aquifers being tapped by observation wells is taken from the KGS's KIWI database, supplemented by information provided by the Geohydrology Section of the KGS.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Wells with measurements that deviated from the local trends during the initial visit are revisited and remeasured to confirm the recorded water depths. Wells that were not successfully measured during the primary trip also are revisited. In addition, about 6% of the wells measured by the KGS are randomly selected for remeasurement to make sure they were accurately measured during the initial trip that year. Re-visited wells are determined through careful examination of primary trip measurements, remeasuring any well that met at least one of the following criteria: (1) no measurement was recorded during the primary measurement trip; (2) calculated water level was up by more than 1 ft from previous years' apparent trend; or (3) calculated water level was down by more than 4 ft from previous years' apparent trend.
Completeness_Report:
Not all water wells in Kansas are measured as part of this program. Instead, a representative sampling of wells is made, so that the resulting measurements provide an accurate but cost-effective snapshot of water levels in the aquifer. As part of the statewide cooperative program, about 1,380 wells in 47 central and western Kansas counties are measured annually. Wells included in the annual water-level census are selected based on the following characteristics: (1) what aquifer they penetrate, (2) the presence of substantial amounts of water in the aquifer, (3) where the wells are located, (4) how they were constructed, (5) the amount of historical data available, and (6) how the wells are used. In general, one well in every 16-square-mile area is measured. Each year, for various reasons, about 5% of the previously measured wells cannot be successfully measured and must be replaced by other wells in the same area. Water levels generally are measured during January by staff from the DWR and the KGS. The measured wells are used for livestock, irrigation, households, municipalities, industries, and monitoring (abandoned agricultural or domestic wells). Approximately 90% of these wells are in the High Plains aquifer, which consists of the Ogallala Formation and hydrologically connected units that lie above the Ogallala.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
To eliminate or at least minimize errors associated with map-reading, incorrect legal descriptions, and confusion with nearby wells, monitoring wells in the WIZARD database are identified with a computer system called WaterWitch. WaterWitch uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and an extensive digital map system to accurately locate wells. Wells not identified with GPS, the Public Land Survey System legal descriptions are used to located the wells to the at least the closest 10 acre tract. Older wells, have been spatialy located by the U.S. Geologic Survey.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Techniques for measuring water levels are well established and have remained virtually unchanged for the last 40 years. A lead weight is attached to the end of a steel measuring tape. The weight pulls the end of the tape downward. Blue chalk is rubbed on the end of the measuring tape to help easily distinguish wet from dry. The depth from the surface to the top is calculated by subtracting the length of the wet part of the tape from the amount of tape lowered into the well hole. If a water line cannot be determined or the calculated change in water level is not consistent with the "local" trend, the well must be remeasured. The "local" trend is the average change in water levels from the previous year in nearby wells sampled in the same aquifer. A water-level measurement is considered good when the water line can be determined with confidence
